About

Hi! I'm Dr. Rachel Kilpatrick

From as young as age 6, I knew I wanted to be a physician. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse, I was exposed to medicine early on, sparking an interest in medicine that never wavered. After years of rigorous training—four years of college, four years of medical school, three years of residency, and two years of fellowship—I began my career as a physician.

Despite my extensive medical education, it was my own health challenges that opened my eyes to the power of lifestyle medicine. In 2015, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, followed by ongoing blood sugar issues after my second pregnancy. Then, in 2019, I developed inflammatory arthritis linked to breast implant illness (BII), a condition not widely recognized in traditional medicine. After having my implants removed, I turned to lifestyle medicine to support my recovery and regain my health.

These personal experiences taught me more about the impact of lifestyle on chronic medical conditions than I ever learned in training. While my traditional medical background provided an excellent foundation, I often felt something was missing. Integrating lifestyle medicine into my practice allowed me to empower patients with chronic conditions to take control of their health. Even for conditions unrelated to lifestyle, the principles of lifestyle medicine have proven transformative.

Ultimately, I believe educational empowerment is the key to lasting health, and anyone—regardless of their starting point—can make meaningful lifestyle changes to improve their well-being.

About

lifestyle medicine

Lifestyle medicine is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to healthcare that empowers individuals to make sustainable changes in their daily habits to prevent, manage, and even reverse chronic diseases. It focuses on the impact of lifestyle factors on overall health and well-being, addressing the root causes of chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

Lifestyle medicine is used to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle changes to treat and, when used intensively, often to reverse such lifestyle-related conditions.  Lifestyle medicine can also provide effective prevention for these conditions.  The foundation of lifestyle medicine lies in six key pillars:

This holistic approach integrates evidence-based practices from various disciplines, including medicine, nutrition, psychology, and exercise physiology, to support individuals in achieving sustainable lifestyle modifications for long-term health benefits.

  • Nutrition: Emphasizing a predominantly whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern to fuel the body and prevent disease.
  • Physical Activity: Encouraging regular movement tailored to individual ability to improve strength, endurance, and overall health.
  • Sleep: Prioritizing restorative sleep to optimize physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
  • Stress Management: Developing techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation to reduce stress and its harmful effects.
  • Social Connections: Building and maintaining supportive relationships to improve mental health and resilience.
  • Avoidance of Risky Substances: Reducing or eliminating tobacco, excessive alcohol, and other harmful substances.

By addressing these six pillars, lifestyle medicine promotes optimal health, enhances vitality, and helps individuals take control of their well-being.

About

Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a specialized branch of medicine focused on diagnosing and treating disorders of the endocrine system—the network of glands that produce hormones. These hormones regulate essential functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, mood, and overall homeostasis.

Endocrinologists are experts in managing a wide range of hormone-related conditions, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Adrenal and pituitary gland disorders
  • Reproductive hormone imbalances
  • Bone metabolism disorders (e.g., osteoporosis)

Treatment often includes medications, hormone therapies, lifestyle modifications, and, in some cases, surgical interventions to restore hormone balance and promote optimal health. Endocrinology requires a deep understanding of the complex interplay between hormones and the body’s systems, addressing both acute and chronic conditions with a comprehensive and personalized approach.
